Guideline For Authors
Manuscripts submitted to Malaysian Journal of Chemical Engineering & Technology must be original work that has not been published or under consideration for publication elsewhere. All submissions will be peer-reviewed. Submission to this journal proceeds totally online. Submissions mailed to the editorial office will not be processed. Use the following guidelines to prepare your article.
Manuscript Submission
Submit your manuscript in the format of DOC or DOCX together with supplementary files;
(1) A COVER LETTER which describes the NEW FINDING or NOVELTY STATEMENT.
(2) RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT (3-5 points, maximum 100 characters, including spaces, per bullet point) and,
(3) List of POTENTIAL REFEREES (at least 2 referees) with their Research Backgrounds and current INSTITUTION EMAIL addresses.
Note that the editor retains the sole right to decide whether or not the suggested reviewers are used.
Types of Manuscript
(a) Article – a full-length paper describing a new theory, or significant and substantial new results in any of the areas identified above.
(b) Letters – There is a strict four-page limit to printed articles. Manuscripts must not exceed 2000 words plus three figures and one table. The maximum number of figures is strictly limited to five. If the maximum of 5 figures is used, then the total number of words must be
reduced to 1600. If more than 5 figures are used, the manuscript will be rejected. The manuscript submitted for review should not exceed 8 pages (including title, abstract, references, figures, tables and figure captions).
(c) Review Article – Review articles summaries and describe new developments of interdisciplinary significance as well as proposing new future research directions based on their reviews. Reviews contain an abstract, an introduction that outlines the main theme, subheadings, and the future direction for resolving research questions..
(d) Special Issue article – by invitation only.
(e) Special Series article – organized and invited by guest editors in different areas of expertise.
(f) Award Paper – by invitation only.
Preparation of Manuscript
Use of word processing software for preparation of manuscript.
It is important that the file be saved in the native format of the word processor used. The text should be in single-column format. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible. Most formatting codes will be removed and replaced on processing the article. In particular, do not use the word processor's options to justify text or to hyphenate words. However, do use bold face, italics, subscripts, superscripts etc. When preparing tables, if you are using a table grid, use only one grid for each individual table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is used, use tabs, not spaces, to align columns.
Note that source files of figures, tables and text graphics will be required. To avoid unnecessary errors you are strongly advised to use the 'spell-check' and 'grammar-check' functions of your word processor.
Article structure
Follow this order when submitting manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, and References.
For submission via the website you are requested to import low-resolution images into the article at the approximate location you wish them to appear. Thus the PDF which is created for refereeing purposes will contain all necessary information. In addition you will be asked to separately upload high quality images. Collate acknowledgements in a separate section at the end of the article and do not include them on the title page, as a footnote to the title or otherwise.
Text Layout
Use double spacing and wide (3 cm) margins. (Avoid full justification, i.e., do not use a constant right-hand margin.) Ensure that each new paragraph is clearly indicated. Present tables, figures and figure legends at the point they will appear in the manuscript. If possible, consult a recent issue of the journal to become familiar with layout and conventions. Number all pages consecutively, use 12 or 10 pt font size and standard fonts.
Subdivision - numbered sections
Divide your article into clearly defined and numbered sections. Subsections should be numbered 1.1 (then 1.1.1, 1.1.2, ...), 1.2, etc. (the abstract is not included in section numbering). Use this numbering also for internal cross-referencing: do not just refer to 'the text'. Any subsection may be given a brief heading. Each heading should appear on its own separate line.
Introduction
State the objectives of the work and provide an adequate background, avoiding a detailed literature survey or a summary of the results.
Material and methods
Provide sufficient detail to allow the work to be reproduced. Methods already published should be indicated by a reference: only relevant modifications should be described.
Theory/calculation
A Theory section should extend, not repeat, the background to the article already dealt with in the Introduction and lay the foundation for further work. In contrast, a Calculation section represents a practical development from a theoretical basis.
Results
Results should be clear and concise.
Discussion
This should explore the significance of the results of the work, not repeat them. A combined Results and Discussion section is often appropriate. Avoid extensive citations and discussion of published literature.
Conclusions
The main conclusions of the study may be presented in a short Conclusions section, which may stand alone or form a subsection of a Discussion or Results and Discussion section.
Essential title page information
- Title. Concise and informative. Titles are often used in information-retrieval systems. Avoid abbreviations and formulae where possible.
- Author names and affiliations. Please clearly indicate the given name(s) and family name(s) of each author and check that all names are accurately spelt. Present the authors' affiliation addresses (where the actual work was done) below the names. Indicate all affiliations with a lower case superscript letter immediately after the author's name and in front of the appropriate address.
- Provide the full postal address of each affiliation, including the country name and, if available, the e-mail address of each author.
- Corresponding author. Clearly indicate who will handle correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, also post-publication. Ensure that the e-mail address is given and that contact details are kept up to date by the corresponding author.
Abstract
A concise and actual abstract is required (in the range between 100 - 300 words). The abstract should state briefly the purpose of the research, the principal results and major conclusions. An abstract is often presented separate from the article, so it must be able to stand alone. For this reason, References should be avoided, but if essential, they must be cited in full, without reference to the reference list. Also, non-standard or uncommon abbreviations should be avoided, but if essential they must be defined at their first mention in the abstract itself.
Keywords
Immediately after the abstract, provide a maximum of 5 keywords, avoiding general and plural terms and multiple concepts (avoid, for example, "and," "of"). Be sparing with abbreviations: only abbreviations firmly established in the field may be eligible. Use comma (",") to separate the keywords. These keywords will be used for indexing purposes.
Reference Style
Avoid extensive citations and discussion of published literature. Use ISI Journal Title Abbreviation which can be found at http://www.efm.leeds.ac.uk/~mark/ISIabbr/A_abrvjt.html. References should be individually numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text (including tables and figure captions assuming they will be located where they are first mentioned in the text), and listed in numerical sequence on separate sheets at the end of the paper, typed in double spacing. The numbers (no alphabetical characters) should appear in the text at the appropriate places in square brackets [ ]. In the reference list, periodicals [1], books [2], multi-author books with editors [3], proceedings [4], and patents [5] should be cited in accordance with the following examples:

Figure and Table
Figures are centered. Use or insert .jpg, .tiff, or .giff illustrations instead of powerpoint or graphic constructions. Captions go below the figures. Indent 5 spaces from the left margin and justify.
Tables are centered and the captions go above the tables. The caption should indent 5 spaces from the left margin and justify.
Revision Manuscript
Revised manuscripts should be returned including revision notes. The revision notes should address the issues raised in the referee report and clearly state per page (indicate paragraph and line) which changes have been made. Additional materials may be requested at the discretion of the editor
Detail format
- Title: Font size 13, Arial
- Abstract: 100-300 words with Font size 8, Times New Roman
- Size Graphical Abstract : Max 3.5x5.5 cm
- Keywords: 3-5 words
- Content: 3500-5000 words without references and abstract with font size 10, Times New Roman
- The total number of figure, scheme, and table is not more than 8
- Reference: Font size 8, Times New Roman
- To insert graphics within the text or as a figure, chart, scheme, or table, create a new line and insert the graphic where desired. If your graphic is not visible, ensure that the Word Style is “Normal” with an automatic height adjustment. If the size of the artwork needs to be adjusted, re-size the artwork in your graphics program and re-paste the artwork into the template (maximum width for single-column artwork, 3.3 in. (8.5 cm); maximum width for double-column artwork, 7 in. (17.8 cm)).
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The manuscript in the format of DOC or DOCX has to be submitted together with supplementary files.
- A COVER LETTER which describes the NEW FINDING or NOVELTY STATEMENTS.
- List of POTENTIAL REFEREES (at least 2 referees) with their Research Backgrounds and current INSTITUTION EMAIL addresses.
- The submission file is in Microsoft Word and NOT IN PDF FORMAT.
